Denton Wood Funeral Home originally was opened in 1946 as Riverside Mortuary by several local businessmen. They were responding to a great need in the community for caring and compassionate funeral service that focused on the needs of families.
In 1950, Bill and Dorothy Carpenter purchased the funeral home, intending to serve the Carlsbad area with dedication and excellence. After Bill's death, Dorothy continued operating the funeral home until Perry and Betty Denton purchased it in 1964.Perry and Betty built a long-time commitment of trust and compassion to the communities of Carlsbad and Loving during their almost 30 years of service.
Perry Denton, now retired, saw his work as more than a funeral service provider. During his time at the funeral home, he was active in government committees, advocating for causes that would benefit the people of his community. The Dentons also continued to run an ambulance service that Riverside Mortuary had established, and they also developed a search and rescue program that successfully reunited many lost hunters and campers with their families from the late 60s to the late 70s. Perry Denton's team of rescuers were the first EMTs in Southeast New Mexico, and the first organization to train EMTs. In addition, they offered grief seminars based on Elizabeth Kubler-Ross' breakthrough book, On Death and Dying.
Dan and MaryAnn Funchess purchased the funeral home in 1992 and continued this excellent service over 10 years, where Dan was involved in countless community organizations and boards. Alan Wood and his wife, Stephanie, moved to Carlsbad in 2004 to purchase the funeral home and changed the name to Denton Wood Funeral Home. In 2010, a crematory was added to the establishment. Alan and his family feel fortunate and blessed to have this opportunity to serve the Carlsbad, Loving, and the surrounding communities, and to follow in the footsteps of such dedicated individuals. They continue to be involved in many organizations and boards. Alan's priority is to serve this community with integrity and provide them the very best in funeral service.
