Zeke "Sonny" Salazar, 60, of Salazar Road, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014 at his home. Visitation will be 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Vigil is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, 2014, 7:00 PM at San Jose Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7, 2014, 11:00 AM, at San Jose Catholic Church with Fr. Valentine Jankowski, OFM, Conv. officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Zeke "Sonny" Salazar was born on April 10, 1954 in Carlsbad, NM to Celerino and Catalina (Campos) Salazar. He graduated from Carlsbad High School and then served his country in the US Marine Corp and US Army over 29 years and retired as a Command Sergeant Major. Most recently Sonny worked for NWP. He was an avid sportsman, never turning down the opportunity to go hunting. Sonny enjoyed taking care of all of his many animals. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catalina S. Chavarria; father, Celerino Salazar; stepfather, Reynaldo Chavarria, Jr.; sisters: Josie Ortiz, Enedina Salazar and Helen Castillo. Survivors are his wife, Katie Salazar of Carlsbad, NM; daughters: Catalina Salazar of Carlsbad, NM, Carolina Salazar of Carlsbad, NM, Blanca "B.J." Howard of Dallas, Texas; stepdaughters: Annette Rodriguez, Cynthia Newton; stepson: Christopher Valenzuela; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; brothers: Celerino Salazar, Jr. of Carlsbad, NM, Frank Chavarria and wife, Brenda of Parker, Colorado; sister, Dorinda Martinez and husband, Michael of Carlsbad, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jesus Fierro, Frank Chavarria, Celerino Salazar, Jr., George Martinez, Harvey Navarrette, Jerome Bustillos. Honorary pallbearers are Michael Martinez, Christopher Valenzuela and all his friends. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
