Wilna Lee Black passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023 in Carlsbad, NM.  She was born on June 4, 1929 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma to Floyd and Alice Lane Marshall.

She attended Oklahoma A&M College, where she met and married Jack Black in 1949.  They moved to Malaga, NM in 1962.  She was a teacher in the Carlsbad Municipal Schools for 25 years.  After retirement she and Jack enjoyed traveling and spoiling their grandchildren.

Wilna was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Black; parents: Floyd and Alice Marshall of Broken Bow, OK; brother, James Marshall of Broken Bow, OK. 

She is survived by a son, Bradley Black of Silver City, NM; two daughters: Dr. Brenda Smith and Tom of North Carolina and Betty Black of Birch Bay, WA; grandson, Sterling Black and Claire Moretti of Westminster, CO; granddaughter, Makena Geleynse and Derek of Bellingham, WA; great-grandson, Jack Schmidling of Birch Bay, WA and many nieces and nephews in Oklahoma.

The family would like to express gratitude to the nursing staff of Good Life Care Center and Enhabit Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 12, 2023 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gene Harbaugh officiating.  Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of the Carlsbad Library or Carlsbad Living Desert State Park.
