William "Bill" Hammett

William "Bill" Hammett, 80, of Farris Street, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2013 at his daughter's home. Visitation will be 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, January 7, 2013, 2:00 PM, at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby W. Fuller, officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. William "Bill" Hammett was born July 25, 1932 in Minor, Texas to Morris and Evelyn (Pomroy) Hammett. He moved to Carlsbad in 1950. Bill served his country in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1952. He married Bonnie Foster July 24, 1954 here in Carlsbad. Bill began work with IMC and retired from AMAX as a foreman after 38 years of service in 1995. Bill married Pat Lassiter January 22, 2010 in Carlsbad, NM. His hobbies included bowling, dancing and playing pool at the Mesa Senior Center. Bill was an active member of the Hillcrest Baptist church where he served as a deacon. He had a love for baseball and coached Little League and Men's Fast-Pitch for many years. To say Bill was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan was an understatement. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie L. Hammett in 2008; stepson-Randy Lassiter; grandsons: Christopher, Joshua, Bucky and sister, Nelda Hammett Nevill. Survivors are wife, Pat Lassiter Hammett; five children: Danny Ray Hammett of Carlsbad, NM, Randy "Hotdog" Hammett and wife, Bonnie of Idaho Springs, CO, Mary Ann Contreras and husband, Ben of Carlsbad, NM, Twillia Doyle of Artesia, NM, Ricky Lassiter and wife, Shelli of Carlsbad, NM; grandchildren: Robert Loman, Larry Loman, Darrell Loman, Shuquetta Williams, Lupe Contreras, Tina Contreras, Jennifer Ryan, Crissy Lassiter, Michael Lassiter, Rachel Lassiter, Josh Lassiter, Kelsey Lassiter, Wrangler Lassiter; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Don Hammett of Carlsbad, NM and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Larry Loman, Michael Lassiter, Mark Samaniego, James Davis, Don Suggs, Tony Evanoff. Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
