Vivienne S. Garner, 96, of N. 6th Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at her home. Visitation will be 1 PM – 3 PM, Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 3 PM, Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Michael Joiner officiating. Interment will take place in Roselawn Cemetery, Calico Rock, Arkansas.
Vivienne was born January 21, 1925 in Wheeling, Arkansas to Owen and Elsie (Garner) Stroud. After graduating from Salem High School, Vivienne moved to Dallas, Texas to attend the Stamps Baxter Music School. However, because of WWII she became a Rosie the Riveter assembling airplanes. She married Sherman Lee Garner December 16, 1949 in Calico Rock, Arkansas. Vivienne taught music for several years before they moved to Carlsbad, NM in 1951. Sherman and Vivienne had three girls: Becky, Beth and Teri. They were active at Fox and Lake Church of Christ and were all good Bible students. She graduated from ENMU with a bachelor of science and minor in music. Vivienne commuted to Arkansas for several summers working on a master’s degree from Harding University, receiving her master’s in 1965. She worked as a music teacher and librarian for 28 years with the Carlsbad Schools before retiring in 1985. Vivienne loved to read and travel. She read her bible cover to cover every year and traveled to every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Vivienne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sherman Lee Garner; daughter, Becky Joiner; brothers: Lamar Kerr, Garner Stroud and Romain Stroud and sister, Lea Davidson.
Survivors are her daughters: Beth Brown and husband, Eldon, Teri Hooper and husband, Terry Dan; son-in-law, Michael Joiner and wife, Dr. Patti Patterson Joiner; grandchildren: Lynn Anne Lowrie and husband, Doug, Lauren Rea and husband, Taylor, Lindsey Joy and husband, Kolbyn, Amy Nicole Reinicke and husband, Joshua, Barbara Elaine Moore and husband, Evan; great-grandchildren: Athen, Kendrick, Laynie, Lottie, Aiden, Haley, Coley, Kaira, J.J. and Evie and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Honorary pallbearers will be Eldon Brown, Dan Hooper, Kolbyn Joy, Doug Lowrie, Joshua Reinicke and Evan Moore.
