Victor Brito Echavarria, 69, of Carlsbad, passed on to be with the Lord peacefully on January 11, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
Visitation will be 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Monday, January 20, 2025, followed by a vigil at 6:00 PM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Liturgy Outside the Mass is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at San Jose Catholic Church with Deacon Melvin Balderrama officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Victor was born August 9, 1955, in Carlsbad, NM to Jose “Chalu” Echavarria and Anastacia “Tasha” Brito Echavarria, and was raised and grew up in Loving, NM with his 4 sisters and 1 brother. The youngest male of the group, he was affectionately called “baby” by his older sisters who helped raise him.
Victor graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1974. He married his first wife in 1982, and together they had their children Ryan and Ashley. For several years, he worked in management positions for the liquor departments at various grocery chains in both Carlsbad and Lubbock, TX. He eventually went on to working for the mines in Carlsbad, before he was injured on the job resulting in disability. In his later years prior to his health battles, he worked for the Brewer convenience stores and enjoyed the numerous interactions he had with customers there each day.
Victor met the love of his life, Lynn Franco, in the late 90’s, eventually marrying her on July 1, 2000. Victor was happy to welcome his bonus children Erica and Bradley into his life and took pride in helping to raise them. In November 2000, Victor and Lynn completed their family by welcoming their youngest son Braeden into the world.
Victor enjoyed listening to Tejano and Norteño music, and in his healthy days took every opportunity he could to enjoy music festivals with friends in San Antonio. He and Lynn were best friends, and they enjoyed several hobbies together including watching reality tv, walking the beach, playing dominoes and cards with family and friends, and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. They especially enjoyed dressing up for Halloween parties, where they often wore winning costumes. When God took Lynn in June of 2013, a piece of Victor’s heart was taken, and he mourned her passing until the day he went to be with her.
A devout Catholic, Victor remained faithful to the church throughout his life. As a member of San Jose Catholic Church, he was active in the Monday night prayer group and volunteered to help with the church’s fiestas for a couple of years.
Victor was a loving father and grandfather. Despite the mixed family he raised, he took pride in every single one of his kids and grandkids. A true family man, he cared for his mother after his father passed away and until the day she passed. He was a treasured sibling, uncle, cousin and friend. He knew no stranger and always took the opportunity to strike up a conversation with anyone who crossed his path.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn Franco Echavarria, his parents Jose & Anastacia Echavarria, and his brother Pedro “Pete” Echavarria.
He is survived by his children, Erica Franco (Kelly) of Carlsbad, Ryan Echavarria (Kari) of Carlsbad, Ashley Echavarria of Las Cruces, Brad Wootton (Kara) of Carlsbad, and Braeden Echavarria of Las Cruces; his grandchildren Madison Barela, Miley Barela, Trent Echavarria, Ryan Echavarria, Jr., Kennedy Wootton, Jace Wootton, and Devyn Franco all of Carlsbad; his sisters Mary Helen Martinez (Tino), Anita Granado, Socorro Ruiz, and Terry Calderon (David) all of Loving; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers are his nephews, Sonny Granado, Lawrence Granado, Jimmy Joe Lopez, John Paul Lopez, David Calderon, Jr., and Chris Martinez.
