Vernon "George" Smith passed away peacefully at home Thursday, January 10, 2013. There will be no visitation. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. George was born in Corona, NM on October 30, 1936. He lived in Carlsbad for 70 years. He was a happy-go-lucky generous soul. George would and often did give his last dollar and the shirt off his back to others. He worked at Cliff's Exxon station for many years and then at Cliff's carwash. George and his life companion, Betty Shipley enjoyed cards and their pets. He is survived by his life companion, Betty Shipley of Carlsbad; two sisters: Ouita Williams and Jackie Shipp of Las Cruces, NM; brother-in-law W.R. Shipp of Las Cruces, NM; nephews: Marc Shipp of Albuquerque, NM, Lawrence Satterfield of Austin, Texas and niece, Charlene Satterfield of Victoria, Texas.
