Velma Grice Brown, 81, of Carlsbad, NM passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at home surrounded by her family. Velma was born on October 22, 1942, in Sacramento, NM to Jack and Eva Grice.
Visitation is scheduled from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 AM Friday, July 5, 2024, at Sunset Church of Christ with Brian McGonagill and Mike Veilleux officiating. Interment will follow at the Carlsbad Cemetery in Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Velma moved to Carlsbad in 1947 and was a part of the Campfire Girls and 4H program. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1960, and then two years later married the love of her life, Bob Brown on February 15, 1962. Over the years, Velma worked as a clerk and bookkeeper for Salt Supply, Penney’s and Cell-Tech. She was also a program director for the Campfire Girls, secretary for the Eddy County Extension 4H program, and a secretary for the Cavern City Bowman group. She also enjoyed sewing, crafting, and hunting with both rifle and bow. Velma loved to travel and go camping with her family, and most of all spending time with her family and making memories with her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed and never forgotten.
Velma is preceded in death by her father, Jack DeEdison Grice; mother, Eva Norine (Frizzell) Grice; granddaughter, Dannett Brown; brother-in-law, DeWayne Canada; father-in-law and wife, Leighton and Hazel Brown; and mother-in-law, Bess Brown.
Velma is survived by her loving husband, Bob Brown of Carlsbad, NM; two daughters: Kellie Brown and husband, Wayne of Bokoshe, OK; and Becky Waldrop and husband, Johnny of Carlsbad, NM; three grandchildren: Lacey Calderon, Justin Waldrop, and Lane Waldrop (Lindsey); six great grandchildren: Makayla Fisher (Dylon), Braiden Rendino, Airyel Akin (Landon), Grasyn Calderon, Sterling Waldrop, and Baby Waldrop on the way; two great great grandchildren: Zoey Fisher and Abel Fisher; two sisters: Thyria Loftis and husband, J of Carlsbad, NM; and Willene Miles and husband, Norman of Lubbock, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
