Velma A. "Bill" Skinner, 92, former resident, passed away Monday, December 9, 2013 at Lubbock Hospitality House in Lubbock, TX. Visitation with closed casket will be 12 noon - 5:00 PM, Friday, December 13, 2013 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, December 14, 2013, 10:00 AM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Velma Skinner was born on March 16, 1921 in Big Spring, Texas to Samuel and Fearl Burkham. She lived in Big Spring until 1935 when her family moved to Malaga, New Mexico where she met Chris G. Skinner. The couple married on September 12, 1936. Chris G. and Velma Skinner had two daughters: Jane and Lynda Skinner. Velma Skinner was a member of First Baptist Church of Carlsbad and was a past member of Child Guidance Club, Pilot Club, LPN Association and Eddy County Sheriff Posseettes. Velma Skinner worked as an LPN at St. Francis and Memorial Hospitals. She also worked as a dental assistant for Drs. Fred and Frank Westfall. Velma's hobbies were crocheting and traveling. Velma lived in Carlsbad until July of 2002. From July 2003 until January 2004 she was a resident of Quail Ridge Nursing Home in Lubbock, TX. Since January, 2004 she has been a resident of Hospitality House Nursing and Rehab, Lubbock, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chris G. Skinner; great-granddaughter: Holly Kay Bailey; brothers: Woodrow Burkham, A. C. Burkham; sisters: Dessie Wheat, Bertha Hancock and Dortha Simmons. Survivors are her daughters: Jane Bailey and husband, Robert of Mayhill, NM and Lynda Stokum and husband, Ed of Brownfield, TX; grandsons: Bobby Bailey of Carlsbad, NM, Randy Bailey and wife, Dina of Carlsbad, NM, Shawn Bailey and wife, Susan of League City, TX; granddaughters: Ginger Crouch and husband, Chuck of Mansfield, TX, Shelly Burkett and husband, Mickey of Mansfield, TX; 13 great-grandchildren: Braxton Bailey Forbes, Chris Bailey, Lexie Bailey, Richie Bailey, Britany Bailey, Amy Crouch, Angela Crouch, Marcie Crouch, Audrey Burkett, Natalie Burkett, Ashton Bailey, Tyler Bailey and Bridget Bailey; sister, Tommie "Snookie" Weisz; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Bobby Bailey, Randy Bailey, Shawn Bailey, Chuck Crouch, Mickey Burkett and John Skinner.
