Travis James West

Travis James West, 76, of McKinley Street, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. Visitation will be Sunday, August 4, 2011 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, September 5, 2011, 10:00 AM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home with Bro. Dale Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Travis James West was born October 4, 1934 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Stanley Fulton and Bertie Lee (Ogden) West. He grew up in Louisiana and graduated from Oak Grove High School in Oak Grove, Louisiana. Travis enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired after 20 years of service as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician; enlisted in 1954 and retired in 1974. During his military career he served in San Antonio, TX, Roswell, NM, Charleston, SC, Vietnam and Albuquerque, NM. While in Roswell, Travis met and married Blanche "Inez" Prince. Following his military retirement they moved to Carlsbad where he went to work for Kerr/McGee Potash mine for 10 years retiring in 1985. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and computer games. He was very positive and a happy man. Travis loved life. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patricia Corona and brother, David Dean West. Survivors are his wife, Blanche Inez West of Carlsbad, NM; sons: Matthew West of Carlsbad, NM, James A. West and wife, Melissa of Keller, TX; daughters: Debra Jean Lambert and husband, Danny of Carlsbad, NM, Roxann Jeffers of Donalsonville, GA, Penny Geiger and husband, David of Donalsonville, GA; son-in-law, Lupe Corona of Carlsbad, NM; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Alton West and wife, Melba of Oak Grove, LA; sisters: Betty Sumrall and husband, Denzil of Oak Grove, LA, Mavis Reagan and husband, Len of Bozier City, LA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers will be Matt West, James West, Nathan West, Michael West, Alex Rainwater, Denzil Sumrall. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1856, Clovis, NM 88101.
