Tommie Carlson

Joyce Thomasine Lee "Tommie" Cain Carlson, 84, of Elora Drive, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2014. Services are scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at 9:00 am at Sunset Church of Christ with Mike Veilleux officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Tommie L. Carlson was born on October 12, 1929, in Haleyville, Alabama to Thomas Roy and Stelma Smith Lee. Tommie married Joe Robert Cain in 1946 in Alabama. They had 3 children, Joe Cain, Jr., Jennie Cain Oney, and John Cain. Joe passed away in 1974 and in 1977 Tommie married Walter Carlson in a beautiful wedding at Pate Elementary School involving school students as well as their combined grandchildren. She proudly became the step-mother to Judy Ledman, Mary Marshall, Tom Carlson, and John Carlson and loved them as her own. Teaching children was Tommie's life, in school, church and with her own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She never met a child she didn't love! Tommie began her teaching career in 1964 and taught at Edison and Pate Elementary Schools, retiring in 1989. Tommie was a charter member at Sunset Church of Christ. She was a good and faithful servant of the Lord until her last days on this earth, always considering others' needs before her own. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Cain, brothers: Harold Lee, Carl Lee; grandsons: John Michael Morton Oney, and Brett Allen Cain. Tommie is survived by husband, Walter Carlson; her sister, Louise Dodson of Carlsbad, NM; seven children and step-children; grandchildren: Stacie Turpin, Joe B. Cain, Kyra McLaughlin, Corey Cain, Nathan Cain, Ryan Cain, Melissa Treadaway, Karen Jones, Cynthia Lester, Jonna Williams, Tasha Broach, Eric Ledman, Polly Ledman, Katherine Marshall, Lori Robbins, Loni Carlson, Drew Carlson, and Breanna Carlson. She is also survived numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Larry Dodson, Tommy Dodson, Phillip Dodson, Drew Carlson, Kevin Turpin and Cody Turpin. Honorary pallbearers are Thomas Treadaway, Bryce Jones, Rusty Michael, and Matt DeYonge.
