On December 19, 2011, Sherwood Thomas Dalton, 76, received his heavenly wings. He was privileged to be at home while embraced by his loving wife and family. Sherwood and Linda Jo were truly soulmates who cherished the good times and weathered the struggles side by side.
Sherwood was born in Stolling, West Virginia, on March 22, 1935 to Willie and Biddie (Ellis) Dalton. He was the sixth of seven children, a cousin of both the Hatfields and the McCoys, and was a descendant of the Dalton gang, yet somehow never spent a night in jail.
Immediately after Sherwood graduated high school, he went west to work in the oilfields of Kermit and Orla, Texas. He moved to Carlsbad to work in the potash mines, retiring from IMC after 38 years of service. After retirement, he was instrumental in growing Linda Jo's Avon business and dedicated a large part of his retirement time and efforts delivering books and products, and was a favorite to many of her customers.
His hobbies were driving and restoring antique cars, especially his 1947 Hudson; riding his Harley "Johnson" motorcycle; picking his guitar; and joining his coffee cronies at the Stevens for daily summit meetings. People were always eager to open their hearts and ears to his colorful, animated tales, which always amused him as much as his listeners.
He is survived by his treasured wife Linda Jo; children Cassandra Johnson of Ft. Worth, TX, Angella Schlothauer (Clay), and Walter Carr (David) of Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren: Shaelyn Ellyson (Nathan), Shandyn, Shaston, and Sean Johnson; Lauren, Joslyn, and Tristin Schlothauer; Christa Miller; and great-grandchildren Wyatt and Sawyer Ellyson. He was actively involved in the lives of his late grandchildren Corey Miller and Chyanne Burnett. He is also survived by his brother Bill (Norma) of Paris, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service is scheduled for 2:30 PM, Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at Carlsbad Cemetery with Nathan Knight officiating.
