Dr. Shelton W. Marlow, 87, passed away Friday, December 14, 2012 at Landsun Homes.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Landsun Homes Otto Chapel with Chaplain Sammie Ellis officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Born, Manhattan, Kansas in l925, to Dr. Hubert W. Marlow and Minerva Shelton Marlow.
Graduated from Manhattan High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy serving in the Pacific as a waist gunner on a PB4Y-2 Privateer from 1943 - 1946.
Graduated from Kansas State University in 1948 with a BS in Business. Shelton worked for Braniff International Airways as a Purser, until 1950 when he entered Thunderbird School of International Management in Phoenix where he earned a B S. in Foreign Trade. He was hired by the Studebaker Corporation and worked in Latin America for 5 years as the corporation's Business Management representative.
When Studebaker folded, he returned to school in Illinois to earn a MS in Secondary Education. Shelton taught at Belleville Jr. College for one year, then was hired as high school principal at The American School in Karachi, Pakistan, where he met his future wife, Edie Kelly.
They were married in Phoenix Arizona in 1964, and moved to Bangkok, Thailand, where Shelton was High School Principal at the International School of Bangkok. Their son Kelly was born during that time.
Shelton was recruited to open The American School in Dacca, E. Pakistan, in 1966. He and his family returned to the States in 1968. He enrolled in the graduate school at The University of Arizona and received his doctorate in Educational Administration. He was hired by New Mexico State University to open a Student Teacher Center at NMSU/Carlsbad, a position he held for eight years at which time he was appointed Provost of NMSU/C. During his tenure, a new campus with a new main building was completed, a strong nursing program instituted, along with course work to enable Carlsbad students to stay at home for the beginning years of their university careers. He retired in 1991.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. Guy Marlow and sister, Shirley Linscott.
He is survived by his wife Edie, son Kelly and daughter-in-law Stacey of Jacksonville, Florida, as well as his older sister, Hazel Van Derbur; nephew, Doug Van Derbur and his wife, Brenda; niece, Janice Van Derbur, all of Houston and niece, Terry Pickle and husband, Jim, of Anchorage, Alaska.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Salvation Army, 2707 E. Van Buren Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008 or a charity of choice.
