Ruth Margaret Underwood

Ruth Margaret Underwood, 89, of North Country Club Circle, Carlsbad, New Mexcio, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Visitation will be 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM, Monday, May 30, 2011 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Graveside Service is scheduled for Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 9:30 AM, at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park with Dr. Larry Krueger officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Ruth Margaret Underwood was born May 6, 1922 in Brownfield, TX to David and Virda (Freeland) Phillips. She graduated from high school in Topeka, KS. Ruth received her nursing degree in Topeka as well. She married Robert M. Underwood on July 7, 1940. They moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1941. Ruth worked for Lovelace Hospital during the war. In 1964, Robert and Ruth, moved to Carlsbad. She worked in the medical profession many years until retiring. Ruth volunteered at the Living Desert Zoo for several years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed following sports. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert M. Underwood and brother, John Phillips. Survivors include her son, Robert Underwood of Carlsbad, NM; granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Mirvine and husband, Kyle of Marysville, CA; grandson, Robert M. Underwood, III and wife, Debbie of Parsons, KS; five great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Phillips of Washington; two brothers: Eddie M. Barnett of Amarillo, TX and Jack B. Barnett of Denver, CO.
