Ruben V. Chavez

Ruben V. Chavez, 78, of Grapevine Court, Carlsbad, NM, passed away January 30, 2024 at his home. Visitation will be 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Monday, February 5, 2024 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home.  A rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at San Jose Catholic Church followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM with Fr. Juan Carlos Ramirez officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM.  Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors.  Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.Ruben was born April 7, 1945, in Cerro Alto, Chihuahua, Mexico to Ramon and Dominga (Vallez) Chavez.  He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1965.  Ruben served his country in the US Army during Vietnam.  He married Eduvigen “Eddie” Olgin April 20, 1968 in Los Angeles, California.  After returning to Carlsbad, Ruben went to work in the potash mines where he worked 25 years.  He enjoyed softball, hunting, and golfing.  Ruben was a member of San Jose Catholic Church, American Legion Post #7 and Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was a wonderful friend to many and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.  Ruben was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Beltran and Ramon Chavez; sisters: Irma Garcia and Celia Chavez. Survivors are his wife, Eddie Chavez; sons: Eric Chavez and wife, Felicia, Steven Chavez and fiancé, Karli, J.J. Chavez and wife, Kim; grandchildren: Taylor June, Andrew, Katelyn, Camden, Kai, and their mom, Erin, Kaydence, and Krista; siblings: Ben Chavez and wife, Rosa, Alicia Bernal, Robert Chavez and wife, Cindy, Beatrice Nelson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Bobby Escobedo, Camden Chavez, Junior “Sparky” Chavez, Fabian Chavez, Rocky Elizondo, Robert Chavez, and Gerald Fernandez.  Honorary pallbearer will be Ernie Dominguez.
