Roy N. Duke, 85, of North Howard Street, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away December 13, 2009 at Lakeview Christian Home. Visitation will be 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, December 16, 2009, 10:00 AM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Terry McKean officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Roy N. Duke was born September 7, 1924 in Corsicana, Texas to Dewey H. and Mary Elizabeth (Larwood) Duke. He attended Carlsbad High School and attended the following colleges, Long Beach Junior College, Concorde and Beckley Colleges. Roy served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 - 1946, stationed at Carlsbad Army Airfield and Shepherd Field in Wichita Falls, Texas. Following the Air Force he worked briefly in the coal mines in Beckley, West Virginia. He and his wife moved to Carlsbad where he worked at Southwest Potash from 1952 to 1991. During those years he operated a TV repair shop out of his home and opened Duke's TV located on Mermod Street in 1972. Roy was a member of Cavern Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon. He was a lifetime member of the BPOE Lodge # 1558, selected as Elk of the month three different times. Later in life, Roy enjoyed meeting his friends at McDonalds for coffee, attending the Senior Recreation Center, spending time with his grandchildren and shared many stories about them. He will be remembered for his kindness and making everyone smile when he sang. Roy was loved by all that knew him. He will never be forgotten. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Glenna Duke on May 27, 2001, one sister and two brothers. Survivors are two daughters: Linda Ellis and husband, Don of Albuquerque, NM and Lisa Johnson and husband, Bill of Carlsbad, NM; four grandchildren: Michael Johnson of Hobbs, NM, Justin Johnson of Las Cruces, NM, Danny Voight of Albuquerque, NM, Dana Miller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; great-granddaughter, Kaiya Miller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and a generous amount of extended family members. Pallbearers will be Danny Voight, Bill Johnson, Larry Johnson, Justin Johnson, Ty Johnson and Bill Hamilton. Honorary pallbearers are Arthur G. Johnson, Arthur A. Johnson and Michael Johnson. Memorial contributions may be made to Lakeviw Christian Home, 1905 West Pierce Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220 or Lakevew Christian Hospice, 1300 North Canal Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220.
