Roscoe Melvin, 86, of Elma Drive, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Monday, September 26, 2011 at Lakeview Christian Home. Visitation will be 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Friday, September 30, 2011 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2011, 2:00 PM, at First Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Land of First Baptist Church and Pastor Daniel Mullins of Fox & Walnut Church of God, officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Roscoe J. Melvin was born February 3, 1925 in West Frankfort, Illinois to Lige and Claire (Mocaby) Melvin. He graduated from Thompsonville Community High School in 1943. Roscoe served his country in the US Navy during WWII. He married Ramona Moore on November 28, 1946 in West Frankfort, Illinois. While living in Illinois, Roscoe worked for Old Ben Coal Corporation. He moved his family to Carlsbad in 1955 and began his career at the potash mines working for IMC, AMAX, Duval Corp. and Western Ag. Roscoe retired in 1987. He was a long time member of Fox and Walnut Church of God and Gideon's International. Roscoe enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also was a talented carpenter and volunteered many hours with Habitat for Humanity and various organizations assisting those in need over the United States and Canada. Roscoe was a dedicated Christian, husband, father and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Allegra Smith; brothers, Harold Melvin and Elvis Melvin. Survivors are his wife, Ramona Melvin of Carlsbad, two sons: Darrel Melvin and wife, Doris of Lubbock, TX, Mark Melvin and wife, Sharon of Antonito, CO; two daughters: Beckie Melvin of Carlsbad, NM, Teresa Nance and husband, Ray of Carlsbad, NM; Tom Worsham and wife, Bev of Grand Junction, CO; five grandchildren: Michelle Melvin, Kelly Melvin, Michael Melvin, Kristi Wirz and Melissa Overton; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brother, Sam Melvin and wife, Linda of San Diego, CA. Pallbearers will be Mike Rogers, Allen Dickerson, Forrest Dickerson, Don Garringer, Pete VanWinkle and Henry Doporto. Honorary pallbearers are Gideon's International - Carlsbad Camp.
