Rosa Elva Mendoza

Rosa Elva Mendoza, 82, of N. Halagueno Street, Carlsbad, NM passed away Monday, August 28, 2023 at her home.  Visitation will be 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home.  Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Friday, September 1, 2023 at Landmark Baptist Church with Pastor Clay Carlson, Pastor Jacob Reitz and Pastor Tim Funchess officiating.  Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM.

Rosa was born on November 3, 1940 in Carlsbad, NM to Juana Sanchez and adopted by Thomas and Juana Medina.  Rosa was raised in Loving, NM where she attended elementary and jr. high and then Carlsbad High School. She married the love of her life, Ramon D. ‘Chuco’ Mendoza, Sr. on September 13, 1958.  They made their home in Malaga, NM and later moved to Lovington, NM in 1969.  In 1985, Ramon and Rosa relocated to Waxahachie, Texas.   They returned home in 1990 to Lovington, NM, where they raised their three kids.  In 2007, they moved to Carlsbad, NM to be near their two daughters, grandkids and great-grandkids, where she resided until her passing.

Rosa’s hobbies included sewing, cooking and gardening for her family.  While in Lovington, she attended Victory Baptist Church.  She worked at Pizza Hut and Big Cheese Pizza for over 13 years.  She attended Faith Baptist Church in Carlsbad.  Rosa enjoyed spending time with her nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ramon D. “Chuco” Mendoza, Sr.; grandson, Carlos Ray Mendoza Gonzales; great-granddaughter, Eleahleh Faith Reitz; great-grandson, Timothy Joshua ‘T.J.’ Funchess; adopted brothers: Felix Medina, Sr., Francisco Medina, Sr.; adopted sisters: Lola Salcido, Carmen M. Moreno, Angelita Ornelas, Louisa Quintela; biological brothers: Fidel and Daniel Quintela; biological sisters: Clarissa Gonzalez and Esma Serna and long-time four-legged companion, Skippy.

Those left to treasure her memory include her three loving children: Elsa Funchess and husband, Tim of Carlsbad, NM, Mary Grace Hernandez and husband, Espi of Carlsbad, NM, Ramon D. Mendoza, Jr. and wife, Rachel of Waxahachie, Texas; grandchildren: Oscar M. Gonzales, III and fiancé Michelle of Carlsbad, NM, Jennifer Funchess of Carlsbad, NM, Hannah Reitz and husband, Jacob of Grand Junction, CO, Caleb Funchess and wife, Connie of Albuquerque, NM, Rebecca Mendoza of Waxahachie, Texas, Ramon D. Mendoza, III and wife, Angelica of Waxahachie, Texas, Abigail Carlson and husband, Clay of Carlsbad, NM; step grandchildren: Joel and Chenay Hernandez, William and Maria Hernandez, Cryselda and Pete Perez all of Artesia, NM; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Ernie Moreno of Galveston, Texas; sisters: Marilyn “Linda” Castillo of Lovington, NM, Beva G. Carrillo of Lovington, NM; niece, Mary Helen Lujan of Chandler, AZ; numerous other nieces and nephews; goddaughter, Rosa Linda Vasquez of Malaga, NM; godson, Mike Lujan of Loving, NM.

Pallbearers will be T. Caleb Funchess, Ramon Mendoza, III, Devon Garza, Coda Duarte, Dondre Gonzales, Dominic Gonzales, Caleb Uriah Funchess, Alejandro Trujillo, Aiden Funchess. Honorary pallbearers are James Anaya, Rudolfo Mendoza, Mike Lujan, Chris “C.J.” Castorena, Manuel Sanchez, J.R. Bustamante, Aaron Millman, Fermin Lopez, Darion Archibeque and Marcos Munoz.
