Ron Grimes, 77, of Violet Street, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 at his home. There will be no visitation, cremation will take place. A memorial service will take place Saturday, April 1, 2017, 10:00 AM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Ron Grimes was born to Wayne B. and Katherine (Legg) Grimes February 29, 1940 in Carlsbad, NM. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1958. Ron served his country in the US Army from 1958 to 1962 in France and Germany. After he returned, Ron received a bachelors in education from New Mexico State University. He taught for over 30 years including Mid-High, Senior-High and at NMSU - Carlsbad. Ron enjoyed history, publishing his own monthly historical newspaper and writing columns for the Carlsbad Current-Argus. He was a member of Fox and Lake Church of Christ and the New Mexico Humanities Council where he was a Chautauqua Speaker. Ron had a love for old western music as well, over the years he has played with countless musicians and friends in numerous festivals in New Mexico and Arizona. During the past 18 years he was often times known as 'Sheriff Pat Garrett'. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and son, Chris Grimes in 1997. Survivors are his son, Colin Grimes of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Margaret Whitzel of Carlsbad, NM and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
