Robert R. "Bob" Calhoun, a mighty soldier in God's army, marched through the pearly gates to his heavenly post on September 13, 2010. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 17, 2010 at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 112 N. Alameda Street, Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Bob was born on September 1, 1939 in Kiowa, OK to Relda and Martin Calhoun. He moved to Carlsbad in 1940 and graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1957. He attended Eastern New Mexico University.
He married Retha Morrison on May 31, 1959. Bob had an extensive career in the mining industry, with the latter part being in charge of underground safety and mine rescue at IMC Potash. He was a board member of the National Metal, Non-Metal Mine Rescue Board and served on the Advisory Board for Brantley Lake.
Bob enjoyed coaching Little League baseball and youth basketball, was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and family activities. He had many hobbies, including jewelry making, cooking, woodworking and painting.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Relda and Martin Calhoun. He is survived by his wife, Retha; three children: Teresa Anthony and husband, Clay of Russellville, AR, Russ Calhoun and wife, Renee of Canyon, TX, Brian Calhoun of Gilbert, AZ; three grandchildren: Devin Calhoun and wife, Ashley of Canyon, TX, Shaela Calhoun of Canyon, TX, Cole Calhoun of Gilbert, AZ; two great-grandchildren: Max and Ty Calhoun of Canyon, TX; two brothers; James Calhoun and wife, Marian, David Calhoun and wife, Judy all of Carlsbad and many other family members.
