Reid I. McCloskey, 92, was born in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania on December 6, 1922 and passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 in Carlsbad, NM. He was attending Penn State on a football scholarship when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Reid volunteered for the Army Air Corp and trained at Carlsbad Army Air Base as a Bombardier. He flew 35 missions over Europe in a B-17 named "The Flying Dutchmen". While stationed in Carlsbad, he met and married Marie Sears. After a few years in Pennsylvania, they returned to Carlsbad to live and raise their four children. Reid taught history and coached football for the Carlsbad Cavemen as an assistant to Ralph Bowyer from 1950-1955. He was Assistant Superintendent for 30 years. Reid served Carlsbad as Mayor Pro-tem, City Council Member, Rotary Club President, United Way board member, and in many other ways. He stayed in the Air Force Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Reid and Marie were presented the A. J. Crawford Special Recognition Award for "Excellence and Compassion in Community Service" by the Carlsbad Foundation in 1999. He volunteered delivering flowers to hospice patients, led Boy Scout Troop 88, and ran fund raisers for Landsun Homes. For 65 years he was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Reid loved his family, gardening, children, hunting/fishing, and golf (three holes-in-one!). He was the son of Reid I. and Helen McCloskey and brother to Earl McCloskey of Baltimore, MD. He was preceded in death by brother, Lee McCloskey; his wife of 67 years, Marie, who passed away two years ago and son, Scott who passed away in 1966. He is survived by his children: David McCloskey and wife, Jane of Carlsbad, NM, Linda Coble and husband, Roger of Albuquerque, NM, Steve McCloskey and wife, Cathy of La Luz, NM; grandchildren: Grant, Leeann, Amy, Kevin, Paul, and Callie, great-grandchildren Dallas, Taylor, Kenna, Coleton and Tinsley, as well as five nephews and their spouses and children. A Private burial will be in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, NM. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 3:00 PM, Friday, September 18, 2015 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Boyd officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
