Phyllis V. Shackelford

Phyllis V. Shackelford, 95, of North Edward Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Visitation will be 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Funeral service is scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2014, 2:00 PM, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Boyd officiating. Interment will be held at Washington Cemetery, Glasgow, Missouri. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Phyllis V. Shackelford was born September 19, 1918 in Camden County, Missouri to Robert and Annie (Ford) Cossairt. She was raised by her aunt Molly Miesner. Phyllis attended school in Stover, MO during the depression. She later put herself through college at Truman State University. Phyllis married John C. Shackelford, Jr. on October 13, 1943 in Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to New Mexico in 1949 and located to Carlsbad in 1951. Phyllis taught school with Carlsbad Municipal Schools over 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, NEA, Carlsbad Area Artist Association and International Good Neighbor Council. Phyllis enjoyed painting, cooking, gardening and working on all of her ongoing special projects. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John C. Shackelford; eight brothers and sisters. Survivors are her daughter, Judy Welton and husband, Art of Carlsbad, NM; sister, Mildred Hamrick of Stover, MO and numerous nieces and nephews. Art and Judy would like to especially thank Natie Sainz, Isabel Venegas, Mary Munoz and Alice Salcido for the special care and love they have given Phyllis through the years.
