Phillip Lee Dodson

Carlsbad

Phillip Lee Dodson, lovingly known as “Uncle Phil”, age 68, passed away at his home on January 10, 2025 surrounded by his family. 

 No visitation is scheduled. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home with Tim Scott officiating. 

Phil graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1974, attended college at Eastern NM in Portales and NMSU in Las Cruces where he received his Master’s degree in education. He began his career in teaching at Hillcrest Elementary where he taught the 4th grade until retiring in 2011. His students loved him. Some students, even as adults, still recognized him at restaurants or while shopping. 

Phil was preceded in death by his father, Wallace Dodson; mother, Louise Dodson; brother, Tommy Dodson; cousin, John Cain; great-nephew, Stormy Hutchins; niece, Debra Dodson; sister-in- law, Teresa Dodson; and niece Kellie White. 

He is survived by brother, Larry Dodson of Carlsbad, NM; granddaughter, Janay; stepdaughters: Beth Spillman, Jessica and Katie Gibson of Carlsbad, NM; nephews: Michael Dodson of Fort Worth, TX; and sons: Colby, Keith Dodson and partner Michael of Alamogordo, NM, Kevin Dodson and wife, Christy and sons Kolt and Kaden of Maricopa AZ; nieces, Jennifer Dodson of Carlsbad NM, son, Zachary and granddaughter, Amber; Leah Hutchins of Moulton, Tx, son Sage Hutchins and his wife, Heather and their children Christopher Cannon and daughter Riley Cannon; cousin, David Dodson and wife, Sharon of Carlsbad, NM; sister- in law, Janet Dodson of Carlsbad NM, daughter Leslie McDonald and son Donnie Gibson of Centennial Co. Good friend Billy Warren and wife, Illene of Carlsbad NM; Phil had many cousins, extended nieces and nephews and countless friends. 

Phil was a member of the Carlsbad Elks Lodge for 25 years. He Loved traveling, going to his cabin in the Sacramento Mountains, arrowhead hunting, camping, an avid Steelers football fan, NASCAR racing, going to concerts, reading a good book and being around his family and friends. 

He will be dearly missed.
