Officer Dwayne Mounce, 64, an active Carlsbad community member and retired Carlsbad police officer, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 31 at 11:20 pm. A Funeral Service is scheduled for Friday, April 3, 2015, 2:00 PM, at Sunset Church of Christ with Mike Veilleux, Michael Joiner, Brandon Watson officiating. Carlsbad Police Department will provide honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Dwayne was born in Levelland, Texas on August 5, 1950 to Raymond Joseph and Lucille (Biggs) Mounce. He was a fixture in the Carlsbad community having served in multiple capacities to encourage and protect youth. Dwayne and Barbara Mounce moved to Carlsbad in 1973 from Levelland, TX where Dwayne instantly fell in love with the small town community here. He briefly worked for IMC Potash and National Insurance before pursuing his dream to become a police officer. He joined the Carlsbad Police Department in 1981 and served for over 21 years, retiring from the force in 2002. Dwayne was passionate about people, and particularly about youth. He piloted the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program during the last part of his police career, touching the lives of countless kids & adults and forever becoming known as "Officer" Mounce. He continued to serve kids in retirement as an elementary PE coach, Teen Court facilitator, and all around community volunteer. Dwayne was an incredible Role Model, Officer, Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend. He was a great influence on many lives, loved without boundaries, and will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Sammy Miller. Survivors are his wife, Barbara Mounce of Carlsbad, NM; sons: Gabriel Mounce and wife, Stacey of Albuquerque, NM, Felt Mounce and wife, Brandi of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Whitney Mounce Watson and husband, Brandon of Greenville, Texas; grandchildren: Andrew Mounce, Olivia Rose Mounce, Madison Mounce, Norah Mounce, Bergan Watson, Colby Watson; brothers: Ronnie Mounce and wife, Ruby of Amarillo, Texas, Charles Mounce of Lubbock, Texas; sister, Cecelia Hurst and husband, Harold of Levelland, Texas; mother-in-law, Louise Miller of Carlsbad, NM; sister-in-law, Jeanie McKean and husband, Rick of Carlsbad, NM and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Steve Mensch, Carl Guillermo, Gary DeSoto, Sherrell Wilson, Mack Mosley and Lance Redman. Honorary pallbearer is Wayne Robertson.
