Nida Jean Magby Ballard passed on November 4, 2024. She was born September 8, 1947, in Carlsbad, NM, to Leroy and Jean Magby. She grew up at Dog Canyon and graduated from Carlsbad High School. After the El Paso Gap School closed, Nida drove the mountain bus route. She met Frank Ballard on the Queen Highway in 1973 when he offered tire chains for her to carry for potential snow. A couple of weeks later, they met again at a birthday party where they had their first dance, which led to 50 years of marriage to Frank. They adored each other and could often be spotted holding hands. Nida drove several rural mail carrier routes in the Carlsbad area for 30 years.
She took great joy in watching her children ranch, farm, and compete in 4-H and rodeo events. Nida enjoyed any time her family was together. Her grandchildren, Sam and Gracie, were her greatest blessing, and she was happy to support them in all their activities, even traveling to Colorado to make sure they knew she was proud of them. Nida was one to support her people in the things they loved no matter what it was. From her dad and grandad’s mules to Frank’s antique tractors to Raeleen in 4-H and Tim in Rodeo and the grandkids in all their activities she was there cheering them on.
Nida loved fiercely and was a faithful friend. She was happy to speak with anyone, whether she knew them or not. Nida would call just to check in with friends and family. Her faith in her Savior was evident, and she loved her church family at Cavern Baptist.
Nida was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers: Steve and Dennis “Denny.”
She is survived by her husband, Frank Ballard; daughter, Raeleen Reed and husband, Terry; son, Tim Ballard and wife, Alison; grandchildren: Sam and Gracie Ballard; sister, Melba Phillips and husband, Tommy, and numerous nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Friday, November 8, 2024, at Cavern Baptist Church with Pastor Herb Gage officiating.
Nida was a great supporter of Eddy County 4-H and had a special soft spot for kids who did not make sale at the fair. If you wish to make a donation in her name you can do so by way of the Eddy County Fair, PO Box 3273, Carlsbad, NM 88221. Please specify that the funds be designated to non-sale exhibitors.
