Myrtle Brown Fritschy, 97, a lifelong resident of Carlsbad, NM passed away peacefully in her home on February 20, 2024. To quote Myrtle, “I am going to die young at a very old age”. Her Grandfather came to the area in 1892. She was born in Carlsbad on May 5, 1926, and lived her early years on a farm in Malaga. After attending Carlsbad High School, she graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s in Accounting. Myrtle met her husband, Melvin in Carlsbad and they married in 1950.
As a CPA, she enjoyed a long active career as a partner in the accounting firm of McKinney, Friesen and Fritschy. She was a patriot. A staunch supporter of the Republican Party, she held several leadership positions throughout her years. Myrtle believed in the power of volunteerism. She served as President of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce from 1995 – 1996 and New Mexico District Governor for Rotary from 1998 - 1999. Her last act of volunteering was to provide 100 blessing bags for the homeless this past Christmas through Carlsbad Community Kitchen. She was a skilled bridge player. Two weeks ago, she was dealt a 4-diamond hand that was doubled. She made the bid with a smile on her face. As a leader, Myrtle believed she could make a difference.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, Eva Harkey and Sid Brown, her sister and brother Evelyn Stephens and John Brown, and her husband John Melvin Fritschy. She is survived by her daughter Linda Rogers and husband David, son David Fritschy and wife Andree, grandsons Jack and Grant Fritschy and several nieces and nephews.
