Mickey "Mike" J. Sostrich

Mickey J. "Mike" Sostrich, 90, of Old Cavern Highway, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Lakeview Christian Home. Visitation will be 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Vigil is scheduled for Friday, March 21, 2014, 7:00 PM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014, 10:00 AM, at St. Edward Catholic Church with Father Cyprian Uline, OFM, Conv. officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mickey J. "Mike" Sostrich was born November 13, 1923 in Logan, Illinois to Mickey Peter and Eva (Guydis) Sostrich. He moved to Carlsbad as a young boy and graduated from Carlsbad High School where he was voted most valued player in Cavemen football. Mike served his country in the US Navy during WWII. He married Bettie R. Mosley on December 14, 1946 here in Carlsbad. Mike worked in the potash mines as a carpenter for 41 years and retired after several years at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. He was a leader with his wife, Bettie in Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting artifacts, camping and wood working. He was active in the Loving Senior Citizens Program as a volunteer for over 17 years. Mike was an active member of St. Edward Catholic Church where he served as usher. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bettie Sostrich; daughter, Shirley Newton; grandson, Marcus A. Newton; brother, George Sostrich and sister, Evelyn Wells. Survivors are his son, Gerald L. Sostrich of Carlsbad, NM; son-in-law, Edward M. Newton of Carlsbad, NM; grandchildren: Vanessa Newton-Morgan and husband, James of Lubbock, TX, Sabrina Murray and husband, Chris of Carlsbad, NM, Michael Sostrich of Carlsbad, NM, Brady Newton and wife, Jenasys of Erie, CO, Ashlee Pennington and husband, Brandon of Surprise, AZ; 17 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandson; brother, Fr. John L. Sostrich of Palm Springs, California and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Ricky Worley, Michael Sostrich, Brady Newton, Edward Newton, Quinn Collier.
