Obituary Melvin Travis Miller of Carlsbad NM, walked through the gates of Heaven on Friday July 20, 2018 surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of his home. Melvin was born on August 11, 1932 in Portales, New Mexico to Clyde and Phanie Miller. He grew up on the family farm in Portales NM and completed High School. He married Jane Corzine in 1955 and moved to Carlsbad New Mexico with their 4 children in 1965. Melvin worked at United Salt and the potash mines before settling on a long term career as a Semi-Truck Driver. On September 2, 1983 Melvin married Carolyn Brooks-Backues in Carlsbad NM. Melvin enjoyed his family and being on the road behind the wheel of his semi-truck. He absolutely adored his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Melvin was a hard worker and was always willing to lend a hand, or a tool, to anyone in need. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Phanie Miller; First wife Jane Marie Miller; Brother Leroy Miller; Sisters Thelma Tatkoski and Irma Miller; Daughter Gale Hurley; Son Ronnie Backues; Great-Grandson Ethan Wesley Hurley. Melvin is survived by his wife of 34 years Carolyn Miller of Carlsbad NM; Sister Ruth and husband Lanny Kee of Anacortes WA; Sister Marlene Campbell of Houston TX; Sister Alta Lawhon of Lake Jackson TX; Children: Terry and Victoria Miller of Fontana CA; Janice Miller of Capitan NM; Vada and Delfin Mata of Carlsbad NM; Dianna Backues and Chris Pearson of Carlsbad NM; Honorary Son Blas and wife Barbara Castaneda of Carlsbad NM; Grandkids: Wesley and Shannon Hurley of Albuquerque NM; Elisha and Aaron Mower of AZ; Michelle and Kelly Canada of Carlsbad NM; Cory Hurley of Carlsbad NM; Amanda and Bryan Utley of Carlsbad NM; Steven Cantrell of Carlsbad NM; Jason Miller of Fontana CA. LOVED BY his Great Grandkids: Aspen Hurley, Noah Hurley; Cadence Mower, Lillie Canada, Chloe Canada, Kody Canada, Kaci Canada; Michael Hurley, Jeremiah Utley, Matthew Utley, Justin Utley. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Joe B. Lopez officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery (old section).
