Mayra De Los Santos, 75, of North 4th Street Loving, New Mexico passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family. Mayra was born on March 5, 1945, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico to Pedro and Francisca De Los Santos.
There will be no public visitation or services. The family will have private services at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with Fr. Pasala Hruday Kumar officiating. Interment will take place at Loving Cemetery in Loving, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of making arrangements.
At the age of only 12, Mayra took off to help her mother in the cotton fields, she worked very hard. From there she went on to clean rooms at the Motel Stevens where she soon became assistant manager. Sometime later, her mother, who lived with Mayra and her 3 children grew ill. Mayra had no choice but to quit her job and care for her mother. Four years later, she returned to work and put in a total of 40 plus years, finally retiring in 2005.
If anyone knew Mayra, they knew that if they would pass her house at any given time in the summer, they would see her picking weeds in her yard, for she loved being outside doing yard work. She had the cleanest yard on the block. You would also know if you ever saw her outside that she had a little fur baby by the name of Peewee, because she and he yelled at each other more than anything, but she loved that little dog.
Her favorite color was yellow. No one really knew why until one of her grandchildren asked her one day. She laughed and said, “Let me tell you why. A long time ago my baby brother Omero got into some trouble with the law, I had to go get him. When I arrived, there was this gentleman with him. Little did I know years later I would be marrying this man. It was your Grandpa Enrique. When we started dating, he told me, ‘I fell in love with you the first day I saw you years ago wearing that yellow dress."
The world isn’t just losing another woman, the world is losing a strong, independent, loving, caring, hardworking, crazy woman who showed her grandchildren how to behave with the help of her good old flyswatter.
