Mary Lou Walterscheid, 81, of West Riverside Drive, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Friday, February 17, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her family. Visitation will be Monday, February 20, 2012, from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Vigil is scheduled for Monday, February 20, 2012, at 7:00 PM at St. Edward Catholic Church, 201 North Guadalupe Street. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 2:00 PM at St. Edward Catholic Church with Father Cyprian Uline, OFM, Conv. officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mary Lou Walterscheid was born on April 20, 1930, in Stroud, Oklahoma to CB and Mae (Hulsey) Johnson. She moved to Loving as a young girl with her family. Mary Lou attended Carlsbad High School. She married Edward J. Walterscheid on September 27, 1946. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. After her children were grown, Mary Lou and her sister-in-law, Gertie, opened W and W Antiques. Later she continued the business on her own, opening Mary Lou's Antiques on Canal Street where she enjoyed many hours with customers, family and friends. Mary Lou's greatest joy was time spent with children and grandchildren. She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters. Survivors are her husband, Edward J. Walterscheid of Carlsbad, NM; children: Betty Sanders and husband, Jack of Houston, Texas, Gary Walterscheid and wife, Jan of Carlsbad, NM, Jennie McIlvain and husband, Tom of Midland, Texas, Patti Crawford and husband, Dan of Houston, Texas, Steve Walterscheid and wife, Monica of Carlsbad, NM, Janice Massey and husband, Benny of Midland, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Don Johnson and wife, Mary of Bayfield, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Darren Sanders, Chance Patton, Jeff McIlvain, Kevin McIlvain, Adam Walterscheid, Aaron Walterscheid, David Walterscheid, Jamie Walterscheid and Michael Walterscheid. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters, Dana Arrell, Chessa Threlkeld, Amy Howard, Angie Weisner, Trisha Bannister, Elizabeth Walterscheid, Shanna Walterscheid and Crista Massey. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lakeview Hospice nurses and caregivers, and all who participated in Mary Lou's care. It is wholeheartedly, deeply appreciated.
