Mary Lou Porter passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. There will be no pubic visitation, cremation will take place. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 18, 2014 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Bacon officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mary was born to Floyd Benjamin and Lillie M. (Hudson) Wixom on June 24, 1934, in Kiowa, Oklahoma. She moved to Carlsbad in 1940. She married Glen D. Porter on February 8, 1953, and Glen and Mary spent 61 priceless years together. Mary was an avid participant in 4-H and as an adult had her own club, Stitch and Stir. She was an all-around athlete who loved to run and she played softball into her adulthood. Mary was the mother of three children, Robert (Bob) Porter, Jean Blenden, and Leslie Fatheree. After her last child graduated in 1975, she went to work full time as a secretary at First Baptist Church and she retired in 1999. Although retired, she spent her last Monday helping to organize materials for the upcoming First Baptist anniversary. Mary was always cooking, sewing, or planting. Once you tasted her cooking (roast beef, fried chicken, pie, etc.) no other would do. If it broke she could repair it, and if it fit in a sewing machine, she could mend it. If it needed to be cared for she saw to it, visiting her father in the nursing home every day to feed him, caring for her mother in her home, taking care of her sister in the hospital, and getting her father-in-law back on his feet. In the words of her grandchild, we were fortunate to have such a patient, generous, selfless woman amongst us and in our lives. She left this world a better place and her simple, everyday acts of kindness will be felt for generations to come. Mary was preceded in death by her father and mother, and her sister Sharon Wixom. She is survived by her husband, Glen D. Porter, her children Robert G. Porter and wife Annette, Jean Blenden and husband Dick, and Leslie Fatheree. Grandchildren Alicia Porter, Sam Porter, Rachel Porter, Tai Etcheverry, Ben Etcheverry and Zach Fatheree. Mary's brother, John R. Wixom, wife Kelly, and her sister, Sally Wixom are residents of Carlsbad. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
