Obituary
Mary K. Grief was born on June 16, 1946 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She passed away on February 26, 2020 peacefully in her sleep due to complications associated with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma while being cared for at MD Anderson and Holly Hall in Houston, TX.
Mary grew up throughout Texas in her early life, met her husband John Sewell Grief and began dating while attending high school in Midland Texas. Mary and John were married on July 2, 1965 in Midland, Texas and later moved to Germany in 1968 where John was stationed in the military. While in Germany, they had their first child Christine Grief Draper, and a few years later they had their second child Matthew John Grief in Colorado Springs. Shortly after, Mary worked while John went to school to finish his degree at Texas Tech University in Lubbock Texas, and a few years later their third child Jason Sewell Grief was born. In 1979, Mary and the family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico where she and John would spend the next 41 years. Mary was the caretaker for the family, spending all her days getting the kids where they needed to be, providing school lunches and dinner meals at the natatorium, and being a great support for anything they needed. After the kids left home, Mary went to work for the Carlsbad Municipal School District where she worked substitute teaching, was a secretary in the athletic department, and finished her career at the Central Office in the business office. Mary impacted many kids, and not just her own. She will be remembered for her witty personality and nurturing care she provided all, even up until her passing.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John Sewell Grief, her children Christine Grief Draper (husband Scott), Matthew John Grief (wife Debbie), Jason Sewell Grief (wife Deidre), her five grandchildren Gianna Noel Grief, Gaven Matthew Grief, Garrison John Grief, Ava Leigh Grief, and Rocco Sewell Grief.
The family held a private graveside service on February 29, 2020.
