Mary F. Porter, 95, of Westridge Road, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 at Landsun Homes. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, August 3, 2013, 10:00 AM, at Immanuel Lutheran Church with The Rev. Andrew W. Dimit officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mary Francis Scherff Porter was born on February 6, 1918, in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Kamma Broue (Hansen) and Walter L. Scherff. She attended school in Fort Dodge and graduated from Fort Dodge High School. Mary married Robert B. Porter in Fort Dodge on September 19, 1936. They were very active at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge where Mary taught Sunday school and helped with confirmation instruction. Bob was a mail carrier and following retirement, moved to Carlsbad, NM in 1971. Here in Carlsbad, Mary was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Mary is survived by three sisters: Ethel Marie Reeck of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Helen Louise Weber of Omaha, Nebraska and Oda Viola Anderson of Gowrie, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bob and Sissy Daugherty and Eleanor Jarnagin. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Edith Lillian Smith; and brothers: Robert Carl Scherff, Donald Bro Scherff and Raymond Walter Scherff. Pallbearers will be Fred Beard, Lindell Smith, Mark Warmbein and Paul Cosand. Honorary pallbearer will be Ron Jones. Memorial Contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 901 N. Halagueno Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
