Marvin "Speck" Gus Albright

Marvin “Speck” Gus Albright, 92, of Carlsbad, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2022, peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones. At his request, cremation has taken place. A service will be conducted on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 10 a.m. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Speck Albright was born March 23, 1930 to Hester and Ethel Roberts Albright in Plainview, TX, living there until moving at age 5. Early on he worked as a cook for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and then in 1957 he owned A-1 Body Shop on Mermod St. where he earned the nickname of “Speck” because of the paint specks that accumulated on his shoes. It was during this time that he met his wife, Charlotte, and he sold the body shop, and they bought Buy-Rite Shoes. After selling the shoe store and retiring, Speck helped out at his son Marvin’s veterinary clinic and toured the country. on fishing adventures. He also started volunteering at the Cat’s Meow Thrift Store as their “Mr. Fix It” man. He tirelessly worked in the back of the shop at his workbench, testing and fixing donated items that came in to be sold. He always met each task eagerly, while carrying on wonderful conversations blended with frequent joking and fun. He was truly one of the “hearts of the Cat’s Meow.” He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Murrel Albright, and daughter, Janet Albright.

The most important things in Speck’s life were his family, friends and animals. Whether he was having coffee with his buddies, volunteering at the Cat’s Meow, or enjoying time at home with Charlotte and feeding his deer, he was always putting others first. His dedication, generosity, kind heart and endearing smile are truly missed.

Survivors include wife, Charlotte Albright of Carlsbad, NM; son, Dr. Marvin Albright and wife, Carol of Carlsbad, NM; daughter Janet Cartlidge and husband, Tom of Henrietta, TX; daughter-in-law Maria Albright of Albuquerque, NM; Grandchildren: Ann Cartlidge of Henrietta, TX; Jana Cartlidge of Austin, TX; Greg Albright and wife, Melissa of Las Cruces, NM; Sarah Albright of Las Cruces, NM; Patricia Albright of Albuquerque, NM and 4 great- grandchildren. The family also wishes to extend their special thanks to TLC Home Health Care.
