Martha Ann (Mays) Bridges

Martha Ann (Mays) Bridges, 85, of West Blodgett Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Friday, September 19, 2014 at her home. Visitation will be 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, September 22, 2014, 10:00 AM, at Blodgett Street Baptist Church with Pastor David Prell officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Martha Ann (Mays) Bridges was born December 21, 1928 in Ft. Worth, Texas to William Buford and Thelma Josephine (Vines) Mays. She graduated from Frisco High School, Frisco, TX where she was drum major and voted Most Popular girl her Senior year. She attended Texas Women's University. In 1947 she married the love of her life, Robert Bridges, a schoolmate from Frisco and they made their home in Carlsbad. She worked for General Telephone Company for 22 years, retiring as a frameman in 1985. During her 56 years of marriage, she and Bob raised three daughters. They shared the love of outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, and RV'ing across the country. She traveled all 50 states, some on the back of Bob's motorcycle for months at a time. She loved to travel and toured Canada, Europe, Israel, Greece, and Honduras. Other interests include embroidery, sewing, playing bridge and 42, and entertaining family with her dancing, gymnastic ability, and musical specialty of playing the spoons. Her community interest included the Eddy County Extension Club and volunteer work for the Carlsbad Medical Center Auxiliary thrift store. She served the Lord faithfully in several areas of ministry in the church including pianist, organist, and Sunday school teacher. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend and will be greatly missed. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert "Bob" Bridges; two brothers: Bob Mays of Tyler, Texas and Joe Leslie Mays of Mossyrock, Washington. Survivors are daughters: Burna Bevers and husband, Floyd of Carlsbad, NM, Marsha Munro of Carlsbad, NM, Rhonda Cook and husband, Eric of Carlsbad, NM; brother, William "Bill" Mays of Ben Wheeler, TX; grandchildren: Eric Bevers, James Bevers, Kathy Scannell, Kelly Munro, Rob Munro, Jeff Munro, Andy Smith, Robert Cook, Cory Cook; 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Eric Bevers, James Bevers, Cory Cook, Kelly Munro, Rob Munro, Jeff Munro, Kathy Scannell. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Cook and Andy Smith.
