Marian Smith

Marian Smith, 89, of West Pierce Street, Carlsbad, New Mexcio, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Lakeview Christian Home. Visitation will be 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, October 5, 2012, 2:00 PM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Veilleux, Sunset Church of Christ and Chaplain John Mezger, Lakeview Christian Home, officiating. Private interment will be in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Marian Louise Smith was born September 10, 1923 in Flomot, Texas to WW and Faye (Graves) Clements. When she was one year old the family moved to Matador, TX, where she lived until 1946. She graduated from high school in Matador, TX in 1940. Marian married W. T. Blogges in 1941. WT was killed during WW II on the island of Pelileu in 1944. In 1946 she married Ralph Horton and moved to Carlsbad, NM. Except for two short periods, she has lived in Carlsbad since that time. Ralph was killed in a mine accident in 1964. They had two children, Linda and Richard. In 1968 Marian married Jack Smith in Carlsbad, who preceded her in death in 2011. Also preceded in death by her parents; brother, R. D. Clements and granddaughter, Kristy Koon. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, active for many years at Sunset Church of Christ as a teacher of children's bible classes and as a singer for special occasions. For many years she was a member of the Lakeview Christian Home Associates and a volunteer for the home pushing wheelchairs, giving help when the need arose. She has been a member of Fox and Lake Church of Christ and was a charter member of Sunset Church of Christ. In her later years she attended the chapel services at Lakeview Christian Home. Marian is survived by four children: Jack Smith of Eastland, TX, Linda Smith of Eastland, TX, Aleta Koon of Enid, OK and Richard Horton of Dalton Gardens, ID; nine grandchildren: Kimberly Goodman, Karen Haggard, Sharon Tankersley, Travis Smith, Amy Burdg, Audra Garner, Holly Ellis, Paul and James Smith and 20 great-grandchildren.
