Maria G. Onsurez

"A mother's love lives within the hearts of her children forever." On October 26, 2014 Maria G Onsurez was summoned to her heavenly home. She was born on May 23, 1921 in Terlingua, TX to Monico and Luz Chavez-Garcia. As one of eight children, Maria took on responsibilities within the family. Her devotion to faith and family assisted her mother and sister in raising her siblings. Maria's father worked in the silver mining industry nearby until relocating the family to Loving, NM. The discovery of potash brought many miners into the area in the 1930s. Her future husband, Elisandro G. Onsurez, was one of them. Shortly after meeting, WWII broke out and Elisandro left to serve in the Pacific theater. Upon returning from honorably serving in the United States Army, Elisandro married Maria in 1945. They were married for sixty eight years. The two raised four sons: Gilbert, Ricardo, Archie, Daniel and one daughter, Carol. Her devotion to her family filled the lives of many with laughter and joy. Reading and current events were two of her interests. But, her greatest joy was spending time with loved ones. She often went on family trips into the mountains. It was a special place that her family would create beautiful memories. She was preceded in her death by her husband, Elisandro; son, Gilbert; parents, Monico and Luz Chavez-Garcia; brothers: Primaitivo, Luis, Pablo, and Fermin Garcia and sister, Amelia G Lerma. Survivors are: sons: Rick Onsurez and wife, Mary of Carlsbad, NM, Archie Onsurez of Oceanside, CA, Daniel Onsurez and wife, Gussie of Garland, TX; daughter, Carol Onsurez-Duarte and husband, Tony of Carlsbad, NM; brother, Susano Garcia and wife, Elia of Carlsbad, NM; grandchildren: Lori Cooper, Michelle Rodriguez, Mark Onsurez, Matthew Onsurez, Kristine Onsurez, Michael Onsurez, Nathan Onsurez, Kimberly Chavez, Jesse Duarte and 13 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the caregivers, MaryLou Olivio, Lena Domingues, RN Monica Rubio and RN Robin Rhodes for the care they have given Maria over the years. Pallbearers will be Mark Onsurez, Matthew Onsurez, Jesse Duarte, Quentin Gerber, Vanessa Rodriguez and Kim Duarte Chavez. Visitation is Friday, October 31, 2014, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A prayer vigil will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, October 31, 2014 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Loving, NM with Father Pasala Hruday Kumar officiating.
