Marge Page, a lifelong resident of Carlsbad, passed away on November 24, 2010, in Okemos, Michigan.
Marge was born in 1918 in Hammond, Indiana. She married her college beau, Eddy Page, at age 18, and they moved to Silver City, New Mexico, to attend New Mexico Western University. There Marge received a degree in elementary education with a specialization in art. She taught kindergarten at the NMWU School until the couple moved to Carlsbad in 1952. She then taught first grade at Hillcrest Elementary School for 14 years. In 1970, she earned her Masters of Education as a reading specialist, and became a reading teacher and later the Reading Coordinator for the Carlsbad Municipal Schools. She was well loved by her students. A letter from one of her students was published in the Current Argus, October 18, 1989, and said, "You taught me to read. And you did it so well and made it so easy that reading became one of the great loves of my life." Marge loved reading and books and sharing this enthusiasm with others. She also enjoyed playing bridge and played duplicate bridge for many years, earning enough points to become a Bridge Master.
Marge was a talented artist and a charter member of the Carlsbad Area Art Association and past president. She had multiple one-woman shows in the area and wrote, "Art is an adventure, every media is a challenge, and there is no limit to one's imagination and creativity." She loved southwestern themes and created oil, acrylic, and pen and ink drawings of scenery, animals, and people. She was awarded many ribbons on her judged art work. One of her pen and ink drawings was reproduced on the cover of Writer's Digest magazine.
Marge loved to travel and she and her husband visited many countries. She enjoyed the history of Mexico and its Mayan and Aztec ruins. On one trip to Mexico, they encountered John Wayne at a movie set and she got her picture taken with the famous actor. She was the only member of a tour in Australia who would dance with the aborigines and one of few in Morocco who got close to a snake charmer.
She was married to Eddy for 52 years and is survived by son, Gordon and his wife Rheta, and daughter, Connie, her husband Tom, 3 step grandchildren, and 7 step great-grandchildren. She will be buried next to her husband in Carlsbad Cemetery on Saturday, December 4, 2010, 11:00 AM, Carlsbad, New Mexico.
To Marge, life was an adventure with new things to learn, experience, and do. Her love of life engulfed us all, and she leaves this world a better place.
