Lillie Mae "Sue" Jones Green passed away Friday, November 7, 2014 in the home of her son, Boz and Suzy Green of 2101 Quail Hollow Run, Carlsbad, NM, who she lived with for the past 15 months while they, with a host of caregivers, attended to her during her illness with Alzheimer's disease. Prior to that, she lived since 1949 on Edward Street in Carlsbad and was the oldest original resident of that street before moving in with her family.
Lillie Mae was born in a dugout on the plains of the Llano Estacado in Northern Lea County, 8 miles west of McDonald, NM in 1921. She went to an old country school called High Top before graduating from Tatum High School in 1939. Lillie Mae was the last living member of that class. She then went to Beauty School in Roswell, NM. On January 2, 1941, she married Houston A. (Bud) Green, also of Tatum, who was 3 days younger than her and her boyfriend in her same class of 13 graduates.
They then moved to Carlsbad, NM where she became a beauty operator in the back of McAdoo drug store in downtown Carlsbad. She worked some years there and then had her first son, Troy in 1949 and stopped working a bit while he was a young boy. From there she was asked to work at the beauty shop inside the old La Caverna Hotel in Carlsbad.
Lillie Mae worked there in the hotel some years before her other son Alton "Boz" was born in 1955. After her second son Boz was a little older, she went to the Cavern Beauty Salon as an operator and eventually bought that beauty shop in the 1960s. In 1977, her husband, Bud built her a new larger Beauty Shop at 106 N. Lake Street and she operated there until she was 80 years old. Being a beautician was her occupation but was also a lively time of communication with her customers. She often knew of the news of the town way before the newspapers, as there was always 'stories' to be told at the beauty shop.
After officially retiring, she took many bus trips as well as many other trips with her sons' families. When asked if she had a hobby, it was merely working and visiting with her customers, and later in life it was all about the grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Houston A. "Bud" Green; brothers: Neil Jones, Z.W. Jones; sister, Valerie Jones Franklin
Survivors are her sons: Troy Green and wife, Linda of Tatum, NM, Boz Green and wife, Suzy of Carlsbad, NM; grandchildren: Ronnie Green of Carlsbad, NM, Scot Green of Tatum, NM, Zak Green of Albuquerque, NM, Nicole Gray and husband, Kyle of Norman, OK; sister-in-law, Vi Jones of Tatum, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews.
