Leo V. Quitberg passed away in his home January 29, 2010, surrounded by his children, two of his 6 grandchildren and three of his 5 great-grandchildren. Leo was born on February 10, 1932 in Leonard, Minnesota. Leo was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Dolores Quitberg, by his parents Alfred and Christine Quitberg, Melvin and Lloyd Quitberg, Grace Busha, Kermit Lindberg, as well as several other brothers and sisters. Leo is survived by his three children; Kevin Quitberg and wife Deon of Green River, Wyoming, Curtis Quitberg and wife Gwendolyn of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Kathy Quitberg of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. In addition to his three children he is survived by six grandchildren; Heather (Quitberg) Hovander, Kerri (Quitberg) Kofford, William Quitberg, Aaron Quitberg, Amanda Quitberg and Aspen (Gutierrez) Kelsey. In addition to his six grandchildren he is survived by 5 great grandchildren: Kaira Kofford, Ashton Kelsey, Sawyer Quitberg, Katelyn Kofford and Teter Hovander. Leo is well known in Carlsbad for his avid support of Cavemen sports, his love of fishing, shooting and various outdoor sports. Leo was one of the founding members of The Forum, a philosophical analysis group associated with Cavemen sports boosters. In addition to high school sports, Leo took time out of his schedule to tutor athletes and neighborhood youth in mathematics and to serve in several positions with the Carlsbad chapter of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, and served back to back terms as President of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. Leo was admitted to the American Society of Professional Engineers and the New Mexico Society of Professional Engineers and kept his membership current until his retirement. He found a great deal of satisfaction in fixing, designing around, and curing problems. He held 1 U.S. Patent. Leo had a wonderful sense of humor, he was a fantastic cartoonist, was honest to a fault and was possessed of a keen mind. He kept his sense of humor to the end and we will miss him greatly. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
