LaVerne Gerrells, 84, of Eddy Street, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013, at her home.
There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Thursday, January 17, 2013, 10:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Boyd officiating.
Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
LaVerne Gerrells was born on September 4, 1928 in San Angelo, Texas to J T and Helen (Latham) Goad. She moved to Carlsbad with her family in 1941 where she later graduated from CHS. After the war, LaVerne met and married Collin Gerrells November 15, 1947 here in Carlsbad. She worked in several local pharmacies and businesses before starting their family. LaVerne was later involved in operating the family business. LaVerne, affectionately known as "Bona", had a genuine love for helping others; served on the Boys and Girls Club, was a Camp Fire Girls Leader, volunteered at CARC Country Store. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Association at Riverside Country Club and a long time member of First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Collin "Bud" Gerrells; sister, Louise Bowman; and brother, John Goad.
Survivors are her daughter, Marsha Doss and husband, Dick of Carlsbad, NM; son, Richard Collin Gerrells and wife, Carol Cole of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren: Christopher Drapala, Danielle Mathis and husband, Matt, David Gerrells and wife, Erin, Amanda Gerrells and Kelley Cartwright and husband, Brody; great-grandchildren: Jeffrey and Collin Mathis and Reagan and Avery Cartwright; and brothers: Joe Goad of Carlsbad, NM, Marion "Shorty" Goad of Minneola, Texas
