Lake Bennett, 85, of 11th Street, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away April 9, 2011 at NM State Veterans Center in Truth or Consequences.
There will be no public visitation, a private burial was held in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, 2011, 11:00 AM, at Sunset Church of Christ with Mike Veilleux officiating.
Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Lake Bennett was born in Rogers, New Mexico on February 12, 1926 to James Moses and Sarah John (Atterberry) Bennett. The family moved to Portales for several years and later returned to the farm in Rogers where he finished school. Lake was drafted and served his country in the US Navy during WWII. After returning, he attended ENMU one semester. Lake worked for the railroad from 1948 to 1952. He married LeVeda Harriman on July 12, 1952 in Dora, NM. Lake went to work at Duval in 1957 and retired after 29 years at the mine. He enjoyed woodworking, working with stone and making arrowheads. Lake was a member of Sunset Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, LaVeda Bennett in 2010; great-grandson, Gideon Elliott Stuart; brothers: James, John and Charles Bennett and sister, Ruth Bohannan.
Survivors include two daughters: Elizabeth Beacker and husband, David of Carlsbad, NM, Paula Stuart and husband, Terry of Las Cruces, NM; grandson, Garrin Bennett Stuart and wife, Rachele of Chaparral, NM; great-grandson, Jareth Alexander Stuart of Chaparrel, NM; brother, Harold Raymond Bennett of Maybank, TX; sister, Margaret Brown of Amarillo, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
