Josephina H. Velarde, 97, of Carlsbad, New Mexico passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022. Josephina was born on March 19, 1924, in Redford, Texas to Julian A. Hinojos and Guadalupe (Mendez) Hinojos.
There will be no visitation, and a graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the Santa Catarina Cemetery in Carlsbad, NM with Wayne Stensrud officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of making arrangements.
Josephina was a hardworking, loving, and supportive person. Over the years, she worked at the Southern Coop Mines cooking in the kitchen, helped families bring their little ones into this world as a midwife, and raised two families, eight of her own and then eight more from a family member. She enjoyed being outdoors and loved keeping her garden pristine. She loved family gatherings, and dancing to music. Josephina was one of kind, and was always good at listening and giving advice. She never knew a stranger, and was always willing to help those around her. She has left a lasting legacy for her friends and family, that will live on in their hearts forever.
Josephina was preceded in death by her father, Julian A. Hinojos; mother, Guadalupe (Mendez) Hinojos; three sons: Steven Martinez, Mando Martinez, and Fernando Martinez; great-grandson, Joe Anthony Martinez; and eight siblings: Manuela Anaya, Heleberto Hinojos, Rosa Parras, Francisco Hinojos, Leonardo Hinojos, Tino Hinojos, Rosendo Hinojos, and Dominga Hinojos.
Josephina is survived by her significant other, Manuel R. Martinez of Carlsbad, NM; five daughters: Belen Lujan and husband, Cecilio of Las Cruces, NM; Alicia Stensrud and husband, Wayne of Carlsbad, NM; Carina Fenetes of Carlsbad, NM; Fevita H. Martinez of Carlsbad, NM; and Belinda K. Colorado of Carlsbad, NM; twenty-two grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; twenty-five grandchildren; two siblings: Teresa Carrasco of Loving, NM; and Delfin Hinojos and wife, Yolonda of Carlsbad, NM; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
