Obituary
John E. Winters, 87, of Westridge Rd., Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away May 18, 2018 at Landsun Homes.
John Winters and Ruthie Loy married on June 24, 1991, enjoying many years of walking, travel and attending local Caveman Sports together.
John is survived by his very devoted wife, Ruth (Loy) Winters, son Don Winters and his wife Renae; son David Winters and wife Yvonne; son Rick Madrid ; Pam Loy Coor- all of Carlsbad, and Steve Loy and his wife Nancy of Washington, as well as a legacy of 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Herbert and Ada Winters, 4 brothers, two sisters and his youngest son Dale Winters.
John was born 4/17/31 in Jackson Co. Oklahoma, raised around Elk View, Mangum and Blair. He moved with his parents to Portales NM in 1946, graduating from Portales HS in 1949. He was enlisted in the US Army from 1951-1955, serving in Korea as a Radar Chief and Heavy Artillery.
Earning a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Industrial Arts from Oklahoma State University, he taught in Muskogee Oklahoma until moving to Carlsbad in 1963. John taught General Metals at Mid High School from 1963 to 1976, until being appointed as coordinator/teacher for NMSU-Cs new Mine Maintenance Mechanic Program designed to provide basic training needed for much needed maintenance personnel in the potash mines. He taught at NMSU-C from 1976 until 1991. For 11 summers he worked at SEMCO in all phases of metal fabrication. He also worked for Eddy Potash in the late 80s for a few years in Metal Fabrication and Equipment Repair.
Loving the outdoors, he hunted, fished and hiked the Guadalupes and Dark Canyon until his eye sight declined severely from Macular Degeneration.
At his request, direct cremation has taken place and no service or visitation is to be held. His cremated remains will be spread by his boys at an area of special meaning for them.
