John "Butch" E. Mason

John E. "Butch" Mason, 69, of Cholla Road, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away February 25, 2017. Visitation will be 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Friday, March 3, 2017 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 2017, 2:00 PM, at Loving Baptist Church with Pastor Jimmy Tarvin officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. John E. "Butch" Mason was born February 11, 1948 in Oildale, California to John and Fena (Davis) Mason, Sr. and moved to New Mexico as a young boy. He graduated from high school in Las Cruces. Butch married Dorothy Hinton June 6, 1968 in Hobbs, NM. He was a truck driver and worked in the oilfield most of his life. Butch was a member of Loving Baptist Church where he was two months away from being ordained as a Deacon. He also served as a Sunday school teacher and had just completed a Walk to Emmaus the previous week. Butch loved to tell stories and many often heard him say, "I'm going to make this long story short." He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Susie Mason; father-in-law, Frank Hinton and grandson Marvin Molina. Survivors are his wife, Dorothy Mason of Carlsbad, NM; daughter, Salli Mason-Johnson and husband, Ted of Carlsbad, NM; son, Sean Mason and wife, Belen of The Dalles, OR; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon Powell and husband, Truman of Tyler, Texas; brothers: Steven Mason and wife, Ida of Carlsbad, NM, Randy Mason and wife, Tammi of Loving, NM; mother-in-law, Mattie Lee Hinton of Hobbs, NM; nephews: Will and Roy Powell, Heath Hinton, Jared Mason, Randall Mason; nieces: Heather Taylor, Kylie Klug and Paisley Cupples. Pallbearers will be Will Powell, Roy Powell, Sean Mason, Randy Mason, Steve Mason, Salli Mason-Johnson, Ted Johnson, Randal Mason and Jared Mason. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com
