Jean Burton, 94, of Cedar Drive, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Landsun Homes. Visitation will be 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 9, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Symeon assisted by Deacon John officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Jean Burton was born May 25, 1921 to Wassil and Irene (Melnick) Zuck in New York, New York where she grew up. Jean worked for the federal government in the War Department, US Maritime Commission in Washington, D.C., Detroit and New York City. She received commendations from the War Department for work completed on the European Invasion and Reconstruction Finance Corp. Jean married Lynn D. Burton in 1949 and they moved to Carlsbad in 1952. They owned and operated Burton Drug until the early 90s. Jean was a member of Altrussa Club of Carlsbad, Eastern Star and served as president of Carlsbad Humane Society. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lynn D. Burton. Survivors are her great nieces, Lynne Crabtree and husband, Marvin of Peroria, Arizona, Kathy Merkley of Lubbock, Texas; great-great-nieces: Sara MacDonald, Heather MacKender, Summer Merkley and Tracee Hickman.
