Jake M. Perea, 93, long-time resident of Carlsbad, died August 9, 2014 at Carlsbad Medical Center.
Visitation will be 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at San Jose Catholic Church. A Vigil will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 7:00 PM at San Jose Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, 2:00 PM at San Jose Catholic Church with Fr. Pasala Hruday Kumar officiating. Internment will follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Perea was born July 11, 1921 in Peralta, New Mexico to Francisco Perea and Eloisa Martinez Perea. Mr. Perea was raised in Albuquerque. He moved to Carlsbad in 1949, then moved to Omaha, Nebraska and returned to Carlsbad in 1950. He began working for Potash Company of America on June 1, 1950, where he was a Journeyman Electrician. Mr. Perea was an active member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and retired in August 1983.
Mr. Perea was a member of San Jose Catholic Church where he was active in several ministries. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist Mate. He actively supported the community in the following organizations: Cub Scouts, PTA at the Cottage Schools, State Park Commission, Carlsbad Mental Health Association, and City of Carlsbad Urban Renewal Commission. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and wood carving.
Mr. Perea was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rosie Jo; brother, Joe Perea; and sisters, Molly Perea, Flora Perea, and Marie Romero. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carmen, and children, Eli Perea (Bonnie) of Albuquerque, Lou Chavez of Albuquerque, Frances Harris of Albuquerque, Jacob Perea (Ann) of Santa Fe, Sonia Herrell (David) of Carlsbad, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
