J. David Smith, 80, passed away at his home, surrounded by family. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 4:00 PM at Carlsbad Cemetery (old section). Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. David grew up in Carlsbad, graduated in 1950, and served in the US Navy as an Air Controlman Third CIA SS. He was a dry-witted, family man who loved to challenge the IRS in his work as a CPA. He loved his family dearly, and in later years, after raising his daughters in Colorado and retiring to South Padre, returned to live at home in Carlsbad again to be close to his sisters and large extended family. He was a deeply-loved son, brother, father and grandfather, and is greatly missed. David was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert and Grace Smith, sisters, Lois Edwards and Eva Lou Adkins, and brother, Edgar Smith. He is survived by his daughters, Renelle Lott (Dan), and Dara Smith (Gareth Thomas), and grandchildren: Killian Lott, Roman Lott, and Tai Thomas, as well as brothers: Harold Smith, Russell Smith and sisters: Jean Magby, Elsie Groves, and Gracie Mathews (Ronnie), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
