Irma was a beloved, mother, daughter, sibling, co-worker, friend, and resident of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Irma first moved to Carlsbad, from Tucson, AZ in 1980, with her husband, Glenn, and their three youngest children. After temporarily relocating to Wichita, Kansas, for one of Glenn’s work assignments, the family returned to Carlsbad in 1982, where Glenn and Irma resided for the rest of their lives. Irma began working as a cardiac technician in the intensive care unit at Carlsbad Medical Center in 1982. She retired (around 2005) and began volunteering at what is now the Terry Able Community Kitchen, where she helped with meal preparation and service. She also began working as a volunteer docent at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. At the park she helped to prepare and conduct such activities as guided tours for visitors, and children’s activities such as Zoo Camp, Boo in the Zoo, and Story Time. In addition to volunteering at the kitchen and the zoo, she often helped with Vacation Bible School, and for several years she was a member of the choir at First Christian Church of Carlsbad.

In any endeavor in which she participated, Irma was known for her upbeat, cheerful personality, her infectious smile, and her frequent laughter. She was a hard worker and a great person to count as a friend. She will be missed by many.

Irma was preceded in death by her father, James William Hopper; mother, Minnie Marie (Manker) Hopper; husband, Glenn Leslie Pfeifer; daughter, Sherry Anne Hoopper; and two siblings: William Hopper and Edna Smith.

Irma is survived by five children: Michael Pfeifer of Carlsbad, NM; Peter Pfeifer and wife, Beth of Tucson, AZ; James Pfeifer and wife, Kiki of Gilbert, AZ; Robert Pfeifer and wife, Melissa of San Antonio, TX; and Daniel Pfeifer of Gilbert, AZ; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
