Helen Summers Blackman, 92, of Mountain Shadow Drive, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Carlsbad Medical Center. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, January 27, 2014, 10:00 AM, at St. Edward Catholic Church with Father Cyprian Uline OFM, Conv. officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Helen Summers Blackman was born on August 29, 1921 to John Lee and Alta (Patton) Summers, a pioneer family in Yukon, Oklahoma. She graduated from high school in 1938 from Ursuline Academy, Paola, Kansas. She attended Oklahoma State University and was affiliated with Kappa Alpha Theta. In September 1940 she married George F. Newell, Jr. He preceded her in death on January 24, 1962. June 4, 1964 she married Roy H. Blackman, Jr. and has since lived in Carlsbad. Helen was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, P.E.O., book club, an Amigo member of the Carlsbad Museum and an avid bridge player. She was also preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy H. Blackman, Jr.; sisters: Elizabeth Weller and Catherine Denton. Survivors are son, George F. Newell, III and wife, Muriel of Pasadena, California; three daughters: Cathy Bilanich and husband, Bud of Denver, CO, Marianne Hanson and husband, Bob, Barbara Blackman of Houston, TX; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Brennan Newell Scholarship Fund, St. Francis High School, 200 Foothill Blvd., La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011 or St. Edward Catholic Church, 209 N.
